Graduate Fellowship Program

We are here to disrupt the pipeline that bars marginalized students and students of colour from all over the world from accessing and thriving in higher education. We are here to create new narratives and make space in the academy that has been historically and contemporarily hostile and exclusive towards us.

What We Offer

Mentorship.

We provide mentorship to graduating seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students who are gearing up to apply for the next level of higher education. We are here to de-mystify the application process and assist them as they draft their personal statements, resumes, and application.

Partnerships.

We partner with racial, environmental, and educational justice organizations who provide external opportunities for low-income students of colour, to talk about their advocacy and social justice work. This offers chosen fellows to showcase their work on a public platform.

Service.

We will provide opportunities and extra funding for students to carry out community service events, connecting their advocacy to their community.

Eligibility

  • We are looking for low-income students who come from marginalized backgrounds - this includes students from the Global South, students of colour, first generation students, youth from single parent homes, among other backgrounds. We understand that income is a huge deterrent from accessing higher education, and thus work to support young people facing financial barriers in attending higher education and who have faced little educational opportunities throughout their lifetime.

  • September - December is usually the busiest time for fellows due to the timelines for scholarship and program applications. From January to August, fellows will spend their time working on their research project and community service and organizing projects. However, this is meant to be a part time undertaking, and it is compatible with full time work or studies.

  • We expect fellows to successfully submit Master’s and PhD applications to their universities of choice. Fellows will carry out community service events and carry out a public-facing research project on a social justice, human rights, or climate issue.

Our Fellows

Throughout the year, we collaborate with external partners to provide opportunities for fellows. Through these collaboration, fellows receive greater visibility to speak on podcast episodes, write blog posts, and be filmed for their organizing and service work. If you are interested in working with us, feel free to reach out!

Fellow Voices

  • "I am most passionate about rebuilding underserved and historically underdeveloped communities like mine through communications and community service. I see myself building my community in a classroom or as a public speaker."

  • “Much of the world exists on a binary that restricts us all from living and being our true selves. By moving beyond the binary, we can better find answers and solutions to climate, poverty, racism, and more when we expand our frame of thinking and existing beyond the binaries that define us."

  • “I hope to be leading holistic sustainability efforts at a large nonprofit or business. My long term aim to to scale up the benefits of grassroots environmental work while also redirecting resources from large institutions such as corporations and governments to further bolster these efforts.”

  • We expect all fellows to produce drafts of personal statements to be submitted to universities (which we will help edit), carry out EITHER two social justice/community service events and conduct a research project on a social justice issue. Reflections on organizing events will be posted on social media platforms and this website (i.e. blog, podcast, video, spoken words, etc). We will work with our fellows to go over CVs, personal statements, have check-in calls on the application process, and to provide support needed with navigating the world of higher education.

  • We are looking for university students in their final year, or recent graduates, who are looking to apply and matriculate into postgraduate studies, starting in the following year. We are especially looking for folks who come from marginalized backgrounds and under-resourced neighbourhoods, and who are traditionally excluded from higher education. We also look for fellows who are passionate about social change and justice and are committed to building an equitable future.

  • Absolutely. This fellowship has been designed to work around full-time studies and professional work.

  • Yes, all fellows will be paid a stipend for their work and to offset the costs of applications.

  • While we will not reject prospective fellows from participating in the program if they studied in a non-English speaking university, transcript must be accompanied by official translations and fellows must also be able to have strong spoken and writing English skills. While we also are firmly committed to decolonizing the academy and de-centering the Anglo-centricism of higher-education, the unifying language of all our team members is English. Thus, applicants must be aware that the entirety of the program will be conducted in English.

  • Fellows can be located anywhere in the world! Our fellowship program is to be conducted entirely through virtual means and thus in order to be eligible, fellows must have access to Internet and email. Fellows must however be willing and able to commit to all requirements of the fellowship.

  • In order to apply, prospective fellows must submit an application to the email below with the subject line “SustainED Fellowship” with copies of their CV, 1 letter of recommendation, and a 1-2 page motivation letter of their commitment to the fellowship program and their research/organizing ideas.
